about us

children at play in a schoolChildren Toy Foundation (CTF) is a Mumbai-based NGO and aims to educate children beyond reading and writing, to acquire real skills, a sense of pride, to develop a positive attitude and to learn while having fun. Established in 1982, by Shri Devendra Desai, (the Managing Trustee) CTF is a registered charitable trust whose prime objective is to inculcate among children in particular and people in general a genuine love for toys and games.

The CTF teamThe foundation harnesses the potential force of toys and games to mould the character and temperament of the young ones. It firmly believes that toys and games not only amuse, but also stir ones imagination, stimulate creativity and spontaneity, encourage the free flow of thought, improve the power of observation & concentration and also teach values like discipline, honesty, truth, courage and so on. Play, healthy recreation and consequently socialisation are prerogative for a child’s emotional, intellectual and social development. Alexander Graham Bell came upon the idea of the telephone while toying with a kite. Benjamin Franklin was flying a kite in a thunderstorm when he discovered similarities between lightning and electricity.

CTF team at a hospitalCTF has been instrumental in setting up 194 Toy Libraries all over India; 86 in Mumbai alone. The Limca Book of Records 1998 has recorded this feat under Human Story - (page no. 49). Toy Libraries have been started at orphanages, schools, crèches, industrial and business establishments, mentally retarded institutions, physically handicapped institutions, Homes for the Aged, worker colonies and even in jails. Youth associations and womens' organizations have approached us to guide them. We conduct ‘On the Spot Game Contests’ at inter school level. We develop indigenous games,

CTF team at a slum with childrenwhich are made available to toy libraries. We visit hospitals such as Bhatia Hospital & Harkisondas Hospital (both in Mumbai) every Sunday to entertain sick children with games and toys. We write articles on games and puzzles, which have been published in ‘Femina’ and ‘Tarang’. We have a full-fledged Toy Library. Every evening, street children come to play games of their choice. We have trained volunteers to teach to play, and also oversee them. The atmosphere is truly divine. Come and see how the young children laugh and enjoy themselves.
